Our mission

CANA, the Carrefour d’aide aux nouveaux arrivants or “Assistance Crossroads for Newcomers” in English, is a community organization invested in the social and economic well-being of immigrants in Quebec. CANA’s mission is to provide support for newcomers throughout their settlement process.

CANA achieves its mission by:

  • Welcoming and guiding newcomers and offering information regarding different aspects of life in Quebec (housing, education, health care, work);
  • Organizing activities that facilitate social and community commitment, democratic participation and the acquisition of the French language;
  • Creating opportunities to meet and foster connections across cultures;
  • Encouraging citizen’s participation in organizing and accomplishing CANA’s activities;
  • Promoting the importance of immigration to enriching our society’s social fabric;
  • Defending the rights of immigrants and refugees, and fighting racism and exclusion;
  • Working in coalition with local and national organizations.

Our vision

Welcoming immigrants in a warm and enthusiastic manner is central to our work. Our interventions are based on courteousness and promptness when responding to participant’s needs. The staff at CANA is patient and attentive, and follows up to ensure participants’ well-being throughout the settlement process. Interventions are based on respect, solidarity, and mutual aid, in the confidence that participants will become autonomous, dynamic and well-informed citizens.

We at CANA – as participants, members, volunteers, staff, adminstration and board of directors – are invested in the vision of an interdependent, inclusive and pluralist society that respects the rights and differences of all of its members.

Our story

The Carrefour d’aide aux nouveaux arrivants was founded in 1979 by the Ste-Croix Society, originally to provide support for refugees from South-East Asia. An registered non-profit organization since 1986, CANA remains an important actor in the neighbourhood of Ahunstic and a community resource for all newcomers.
