School-Based Activities

Since 2006, CANA, in partnership with the Commission scolaire de Montréal, offers services in two primary schools in Ahuntsic (Saint-Benoît and Saint-Simon-Apôtre). In these schools, a community worker from CANA welcomes newcomer parents and coordinates projects that encourage cross-cultural exchange.

Role of ICSI (intervenante communautaire scolaire interculturelle, or “community, education and cross-culture worker”):

The role of the ICSI is to support and guide newly arrived families through the integration process, and to offer support and expertise to schools. More specifically, the ICSI works from these two schools two days a week, in order to:

  • Ensure the development of trust between parents and the school;
  • Assist families in their settlement and integration process;
  • Organize information sessions for the school staff on issues of cultural difference;
  • Offer support for classes of recently-arrived students;
  • Provide occasional support for special events.
